What do all these technical photographic terms mean?

Studio Flash is a professional variable power flash system which has the option to change the way in which the light is used through various tools known by some of these slightly unusual names. A good way o think of studio flash lighting as someone told me years ago is "like portable Sun" and that's pretty much what it is. We arrange a number of these "portable Suns" around you in the studio to create the image we want.

Soft Boxes: These go in front of the flash head to soften and diffuse the light.

Umbrellas: Unsurprisingly, these look rather like your regular umbrella. Different types of material allow us to either bounce or soften the light from the flash.

Snoot: This is a long "snout" like device that allows us to concentrate a small beam of light on a subject's features, typically used as "hair lights" to enhance the look of your hair in an image.

Barn Doors: These are simple mechanical doors fitted in front of a light in order to change the area of light spill. You may have seen these in TV shows or at the theater.

Gels & Honeycombs: Gels are pieces of coloured acetate that change the colour of light from the flash to enhance mood or change background colour. A honeycomb is a metal insert in a honeycome shape that concentrates light from a snoot or back light.

About Us

Deborah Norrey at Studio Lombos

Hi! I'm Martin Norrey, now an incredible 45 years old! I had a keen interest in photography from the age of 6! Working with ancient "two and a quarter square" formats back in the late 70's I progressed on to 35mm from the early days and always had a darkroom at home. Starting ESS in 94 with Nick Whiteley precluded photography for some time in favour of World travel in the name of Rocket Science. Since retiring to Portugal in 2008 I have begun the photographic odyssey that I always intended. In the meantime I have had work exhibited at the RHS show and worked with studio models such as Kate Brox.

Now I am concentrating on Portrait work in our luxury studio at Lombos, along with a little glamour and a large dose of Algarvian life and landscape.

Here I am with my (now ancient) Praktika TL1000 35mm Film SLR (with revolutionary through lens metering!) and even older Leningrad light meter (still works, that's the Ruskies for you!) taken in the studio by Deb with our barn door and snoot lights.

I would love you to come and see our studio and be photographed or learn better photographic techniques here in the wonderful Algarve.

Hi! I'm Deb, Martin's wife and studio director here at Lombos. My job is to make you feel at home when you visit us, generally by plying you with Wine, Tea, Coffee etc.

I'm here to help Martin with our "Portable Sunshine" (a great simplification of studio flash from one of the guys at WPS studio's on a Kate shoot some time back) and to make certain that you are not harangued by photographers in any way!

I have a good feel for Portraiture and will always ensure that you are at your ease in the studio, by far the best way to be certain of a good result.

I am here for every shoot and it's my job to add a female perspective to the proceedings that Certain Photographers may (just occasionally) tend to gloss over.

I am always delighted to meet our clients and show you the best of our luxury Villa studios from our flash sets to our excellent poolside.

So there is absolutely no need to be afraid, we have two children (19 and 15 years old) so we can handle kids in that "been there, done that, got the T-Shirt" way. Surprisingly however, it's usually the adults that feel a bit wooden at first, the kids (as usual) tend to simply take it all in their stride. '
